Get Rid of Cockroaches, Silverfish, Wasps, and Spiders- Top 10 Tools and Tips

           German Cockroach                                   Silverfish
What a nuisance! Ants, spiders, cockroaches, wasps and on and on they go. You know what they say about bugs right? There are two types of homes. There are those that have bugs, and there are those that are going to get them.

Here are the top 10 things you can do to eliminate the pests from your home for good.

  1. Eliminate all cardboard boxes in the home. This includes boxes used for storage in the attic spaces, closets, and around the home. Replace with plastic storage bins.
  2. Eliminate as much paper records as possible. Where original copies are not required, scan documents and store onto storage devices. Flash drives are okay, but external hard drives are an awesome way to store massive amounts of pictures and documents. You can get a 2 terabyte external hard drive for around $100. Store additional papers in gallon sized zip lock bags, These can be placed into larger bins and stowed away.
  3. Get rid of all paper bags, and any cardboard products that come home with you from the grocer. The ingredients in cardboard cereal boxes and food containers can be emptied and stored in plastic containers.
  4. Purchase Borid, a crack and crevice powder with the active ingredient of boric acid.
  5. After you purchase the Borid online from the do it yourself pest control store, you will need to do a full crack and crevice service on your house. I will go through the easy process step by step at the end of this blog.
  6. Purchase Maxforce Pro Roach Killer Bait Gel and use small amounts in cracks in crevices in areas of the house where water is present. This will need to go behind cracks and crevices out of sight.
  7. Purchase Demon WP (Wetable Powder) and a Chapin pump up sprayer. Put on a pair of protective gloves and glasses. Being outside, mix the powder with water in the Chapin sprayer per the label directions. Adjust the setting of the spray tip to coarse. Slowly walk around the house and as you do, spray the base of the house two feet high. Spray around windows and doors, and spray the eves. For higher eves, the setting can be set for power spray to reach those hard to reach areas.
  8. If you see spiders give them a dose of Demon as well. Demon WP works okay on spiders but Tempo WP works much better in keeping them away. So for really infested cases of spiders, you will definitely want to use Tempo WP. It works great.
  9. As you are moving along, be careful for wasps nest. You will want to give those a smothering and be as quick about it as you can. As soon as you wet them down, they will lose their ability to fly and drop to the ground and die. This will also work on Dirt Dobbers too. Note: During the day the wasps come and go as they are building their nest. It is best to treat the nests right after dark when all of the wasps are home.
  10. After treating the outside of the house, adjust your sprayer to a fine spray. As you go through the house. spray the baseboards of the outside walls. Include spraying under windows, sinks, under sinks where the pipes come out, in the corners of the house where you may see spiders, in the garage high and low. After a few days and up to a week, you may see increased activity as the do it yourself pest control job takes effect. Please note the steps for using Borid Below:
  • Turn off all air conditioners and cover all food.
  • If you have kids or pets keep them away from the areas that you are working in. You may crate the dogs, and let the kids stay at a friends house.
  • Look for cracks inside the house, behind cabinets, beside dishwashers, behind electrical plates, under sinks where the plumbing comes out, behind light fixtures on the ceiling, under cracks in the baseboards etc.
  • Apply the Borid in a fine powder. Do not apply a large amount. What you want is a fine dusting in these areas. This fine dust will get on the feet and the underside of the unwanted pest. This will cause scratching of the underside, causing dehydration and also the pest will ingest it when licking the feet causing internal poisoning.
  • Be sure to re-install all electrical outlets after you remove them and wipe down all counters and food areas that may have residual dust.
Great job on doing your own pest control. Just be sure to repeat the crack and crevice annually and treat the outside and inside with spray once every six months- or more often as needed.
